The primary concern is the type of wood you will choose to build with, of course. Perhaps the best wood, and you can choose the one that is most traditional, is Western red cedar. Western red cedar has natural preservatives in wood and left alone, even without sealants will last a very long time. An alternative to Western red cedar that lasts as long but has a more non-traditional look is redwood. I grew up in California, and redwood is plentiful out there, but here on the East Coast where I live now, it’s a bit harder to come by. You’ll have tosee what’s available in your area.

Be prepared, though. High-quality Western red cedar is not cheap. If you thought that building your own patio furniture was going to save you a bundle of money, you may be rethinking that right about now. But really, if the chairs you saw outside of the Cracker Barrel or your local garden center is more affordable than just the wood at your local lumber provider, then you have to seriously question the quality of their wood.

So, what should you do if the Western red cedar is prohibitively expensive? You may consider another softwood, select pine. Ask for it at your lumberyard.

You may also consider building from hardwood, such as oak or maple, but really I’d advise against it. Hardwood can be hard to work with. Andexpensive.

You want your patio furniture to weather well, look good for a long time, and support your weight for many years. While it may be tempting to use a lesser grade or species of wood, saving money here really isn’t that great of a plan.
